i went to the oregon coast aquarium on wednesday with the little boy. regardless of the cold, wintery weather it was still an enjoyable place to visit. i really enjoyed myself there. ashton had no idea where to start; everything was interesting for just a moment before the next tank lured him away. he was desperately excited when i told him there were sharks. he liked the seals, but not the playful otters sitting next to the glass. the giant octopus was not interesting at all to him. the real fun was the interactive tidepool tank. touching the sticky green anemones was his favorite. the front part of the abalones also attracted his eager fingers. the starfish were fun to touch briefly. not as much as the urchins though: if you hold your finger between their spines, the spines will all come together around your finger. according to the lady, this was the urchin version of a "hug."

hrmph.

while the crabs and shrimps of all sorts were the main attraction, and extremely fascinating, the creature that held my fascination was none other than the deep sea isopod. the most terrifying creature i think ive ever seen. they look like giant potato bugs. except instead of quickly crawling off your hand in fear, the deep sea isopod would quickly consume your hand in the most gruesome of ways. in mere seconds what was once your hand would be a shredded piece of hamburger. so gross. so scary. if they could live on land, and work in organized packs, civilization would have serious problems.

here is an example of an angry potato bug/deep sea isopod:
