day after day i find myself sitting around waiting for something exciting to happen somewhere in the world. i eagerly anticipate seeing headines suddenly appear on yahoo news reading "huge loss of life". and having the news coverage just spend an aching amount of time covering every aspect of the disaster. but day in and day out, the world remains calm. deaths rise in iraq. high profile trials come and go. villians appear and wear out.
but today im feeling a sense of guilt. guilt and shock. guilt shock and horror.
and a bittersweet excitment.
twenty two thousand deaths.
TWENTY TWO.....THOUSAND.....DEAD INDIVIDUALS.
unheard of. unbelievable. incomprehensible.
in contrast to the september 11th attacks that left a mere three thousand people dead, the world stepped in to mend a searing wound in our morale. and yet, i find myself wondering just how determined and generously concerned americans will be to the southeastern asian countries now barren mine fields of bodies. families. tourists. civilians. fathers. mothers. children. pets. homes. friends and whole lives.
twenty two thousand. at least. and we lost three thousand. it would take seven september 11th attacks to equal the amount of people lost in one single devastating earthquake. did us americans even bat an eye? did we send an unrelenting amount of emotional and financial support overseas? i hope so.
something exciting is unfolding. something to be "entertained" by. theres been a slight drop in the human population. good for the planet, but sobering for anyone still alive who gives a damn about being alive.
twenty two thousand. im trying to comprehend what that looks like in one lump sum. if every person was 5 foot 6 inches, and laid head to head, that would amass to about 121,000 feet. thats hauntingly close to 22 miles....of bodies.
incomprehensible.
