i could have held that door open all night. i could have just listened to the last few drops of rain fall against the tree a few feet from where i stood. i could have just stared at the car across the street with its dome light on. i could have done anything to just never leave those last few minutes behind. just eight minutes worth of my life unconcerned with anything else. a tv flashing in the background, a symphony of snores from the couches, a boy with chocolate smeared all over his face.

but over the droning of everything else, in the last moments before i shut the door....

it had been worth the wait.
