this was the horoscope for me the day of valentines:

Have you posted your card? Have you made your plans? You're not going to get a table for tomorrow night at this short notice. But why should any of that be a problem? You are a Sagittarian; you live on your luck. You are spontaneous. You don't have to have it all laid out in advance - and nor do you have to do what everyone else is doing, when they happen to be doing it. What's happening now is right for you. And it is, therefore, right for everyone else who matters - or is about to matter - to you.

reading this would slightly assuage the anxiety julie was experiencing over my apparent lack of any established plans for valentines day. the one day a year guys were taught to spoil the women in their lives, according to her. its just a consumer holiday, i tried to protest. she was not pleased. but soon found this, a preordained explanation detailing the structure of the relationship i have with julie.

as discovered by julie.

Capricorn & Sagittarius

When Sagittarius and Capricorn join together in a love match, things may start slow and they may feel that they don't have much to gain from the other. In some ways, Sagittarius and Capricorn are opposites: Sagittarius is easy going, whimsical, seeks knowledge for its own sake, always jumps headfirst into new things, and is typically impatient. Capricorn is detail-oriented and passive, even shy, and is always looking toward the next project. Their differences can actually forge a stronger relationship in the long run, there being vast amounts each partner can learn from the other.

Early in the relationship, Sagittarius and Capricorn may not be able to see past one another's flaws. Sagittarius can at times seem unruly, and Capricorn may come across pompous and elitist. But once they stop focusing on one another's faults and look to their respective strengths, they'll see a vast pool of attractive qualities. Sagittarius can show Capricorn adventure and excitement, and can offer a glimpse of the freedom so often missing from Capricorn's life. Capricorn teaches Sagittarius to pay attention to detail, uncovers the knowledge that the little things are important, and helps them to harness their random energy. Sagittarius may view Capricorn as too responsible, and will teach their partner to lighten up. Capricorn may accuse Sagittarius of being reckless and impulsive, and can help them to become well mannered.

Sagittarius is ruled by the Planet Jupiter and Capricorn follows the Planet Saturn. Jupiter is about higher learning, philosophy, expansion of knowledge and good luck that sometimes leads to excess. Saturn is the ruler of hard work, assiduousness, ambition and responsibility. Their affects on one another can be positive and tend to bring out each other's best aspects. Both Signs need to take a step back to appreciate their partner's approach; Sagittarius can teach Capricorn to be more spontaneous, while at the same time gaining stability from Capricorn's rational outlook.

Sagittarius is a Fire Sign, and Capricorn is an Earth Sign. Sagittarius initiates projects after philosophical evaluation, while Capricorn takes more practical, factual approach. Capricorn will think about the consequences of their activities, whereas Sagittarius loves to explore merely for their own personal satisfaction. Although these partners may have difficulties arising from their diverse morals, when they put their differences aside they make an excellent couple due to their well-rounded, complementary natures.

Sagittarius is a Mutable Sign, and Capricorn is a Cardinal Sign. Sagittarius isn't necessarily a leader or motivating force; when they have a good idea and see a way to contribute, they enjoy doing their part. Capricorn, on the other hand, comes up with the ideas and assigns roles to others. Sagittarius and Capricorn can work toward the same goals with great success due to a lack of conflict over roles.

What's the best aspect of the Sagittarius-Capricorn relationship? It's their effectiveness in working out minor bumps in the road. When they overcome their initial resistance to one another, this pair will see how much they have to gain from one another. Their personalities, different in so many ways, make theirs a highly effective love match.

and so, following that bitter dispute over valentines plans (i knew the day was fast approaching, but didnt realize it was thursday. so when julie casually asked me what i had planned for us thursday night i replied, "i dont know what youre doing, but im watching lost." she was not amused.) i formulated some ideas in hopes of not only pleasing, but impressing her. and so i began.

the night before i fashioned an elaborately created valentines day card using the elmers glue, construction paper and safety scissors we had used for ashtons class valentines. i couldnt decide on a particular pattern. so i used three. once that was complete, i hollowed out two mangos. she thrives on mangos. after the pits had been carefully removed from their centers, i filled the space with blueberries and blackberries, holding them inside their mango prison with expertly placed dry linguine noodles at the base. these i set into a bowl big enough for both mangos, and filled the bottom with the rest of the berries. mangos overflowing with berries. it looked good.

this i presented to her at 7 am, just as her alarm was rousing her annoyingly from sleep. she was surprised i was even awake at all, let alone showered dressed and offering a breakfast of fruit. i sent her off to work and finished up my shopping for the meal to come that evening.

1 cup dry white wine
1/4 cup minced shallots
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 tablespoon grated peeled fresh ginger
2 tablespoons whipping cream
1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces
2/3 cup chopped seeded plum tomato
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1 1/2 cups hot cooked linguine
Cooking spray
3/4 pound large sea scallops
1/8 teaspoon salt
Chopped cilantro

Combine first 4 ingredients in a medium skillet; bring to a boil. Cook until reduced to 1/2 cup (about 5 minutes). Drain mixture through a fine sieve into a bowl, reserving liquid; discard solids.

Return wine mixture to skillet. Add cream; cook over medium heat 1 minute. Add butter, stirring until butter melts. Stir in tomato, 2 tablespoons cilantro, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and pepper. Add linguine; toss well. Cover and keep warm.

Heat a large nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray over medium-high heat. Sprinkle scallops with 1/8 teaspoon salt. Arrange scallops in pan; cook 2 minutes on each side or until done. Add scallops to pasta mixture; toss gently to combine. Garnish with cilantro, if desired

as she readied herself in the bathroom, i put in my dean martin/frank sinatra mixed cd i had previously created and got to work. as dean martins "besame mucho" filled her small apartment, the meal slowly pieced itself together. i had no idea if this was going to work. limes? wine? shallots? ginger?

how was this combination going to work towards anything but distastful waste! but it worked. it worked very well. julie loves the tomatoes, jordan loves the seafood. amongst candles and frank sinatras "moonlight serenade" we dined and talked quietly. she presented me with an unexpected gift to which i was quite pleased to receive: an hour of sailing lessons. if nothing else, julie has an astounding ability to be remarkably thoughtful.

since i had previously checked the weather report, and filled my car with large puffy jackets and warm gloves, the rest of the evening would conclude on council crest, with a telescope. however, what had been a strikingly clear evening when i arrived at julies, had now become disappointingly overcast. so without the telescope, we huddled under a blanket, seated on a bench high above the city. the cold was penetrating. but it was beautiful. it always is.

and that was my valentines day. thrown together at the last minute. effectively executed. successfully completed.
